Gary G. Greene - Biography

Gary's love of nature has influenced his work from his earliest years. He considers himself a plein air painter, preferring to sketch or paint on location rather than being restricted to his studio.  Gary began his career in the Washington, DC metro area, drawing maps for his local park and planning commission and then working as a school planner. "I grew up with art projects in our home thanks to my mother and she let me use all of her materials and art supplies. I didn't have the money or time to go to school for art, so I went to the library and got books and started to draw and paint," He says.

"I started with pastels and oil, but my mother who was an artist and worked at Walter Reed Hospital as a medical illustrator, encouraged me to do watercolor since all the illustrations she did were in watercolor.  After she died at age 57, Gary decided to stop painting with oil and focus on watercolor as a memorial to her. He soon found that he loved watercolor and has worked exclusively in the medium since.

Gary retired from his school job in 1984 and focused full-time on painting. In over 50 years of painting Gary  estimates he has done thousands of paintings and has worked in all media, but watercolor has proven the most spontaneous and portable of all.

At age 19 Gary married his childhood sweetheart, Patricia. The romance is just as strong today as it was way back then. Together they live in their studio home in Ephrata, PA where they love to entertain and receive visitors to view his artwork.

"Nature is awe inspiring. I feel so much closer to God when out in nature...in the woods on a hillside, or by a pond" -Gary

"Everywhere I look, I see motifs and they change constantly with different lighting and seasonal change. The possibilities are endless. I try to express those feelings in my paintings." - Gary

Serving as Artist in Residence, Gary has participated in the Arts in Education Program of the Maryland State Arts Council. He is a member of the American Impressionist Society, the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society and was a former president of the Washington Society of Landscape Painters.

Gary has had one man exhibitions at Mulberry Art studios, Lancaster, PA; Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC; University Club, Washington, DC; Weinberg Arts Center, Frederick, MD and was given a "Twenty-five Year Retrospective" show at the Civic Center Mansion Galleries, Rockville, MD.

More than three thousand of Gary's paintings are found in private and corporate collections. Those include the late Bishop John T. Walker, Washington National Cathedral; the Kennecott Copper Corporation; Baltimore Gas and Electric Company; and International Business Machines.
